"Welcome to the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. I am Dr. Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, the current Head. The Department offers three undergraduate programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of science degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Forensic Science. The Department also offers M.Sc and PhDs in Analytical Chemistry, Colour Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
The teaching and research facilities at the Department are world standard. The laboratories have recently been expanded, remodelled and equipped with state of the art equipment needed for cutting edge researches. This will definitely provide a more conducive atmosphere for a better teaching and research experience.
The Department has the highest number of academic staff in the university, of which 75 percent hold PhD from some of the leading institutions in the world. In addition, our laboratory technologist are highly trained. Most of them hold M.Sc while some are pursuing PhD in various disciplines of Chemistry.
The Department has a wide range of active research areas including analytical chemistry, heterogenous catalysis, polymer and materials chemistry, nanochemistry, colour chemistry, natural product and medicinal chemistry, organometallic chemistry and homogenous catalysis, Electrochemistry and corrosion prevention, solid state, chemistry of coordination compounds and their applications e. t. c.
Before closing, I will like to comment on the employability of our graduates. Our record shows a very good employability index. The Department serve as a major supplier of academic and technical staff for most of the neighbouring institutions and workforce of many chemistry based industries in Nigeria and beyond. This is evident as many of our graduates are currently holding top positions in industries, government, and the academia. Furthermore, our graduates have set a record of winning several scholarships and grants for post-graduate studies in some of the world’s leading academic institutions.
