You are welcome to the Department of Physics, Faculty of Physical Sciences under the college for Natural and Pharmaceutical science, Bayero University, Kano. The Department offers two undergraduate programs leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc,) honors degrees in Physics and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc,) honors degree in Electronics with Physics. The Department was established in 1976 when the Faculty of Science was created. The founding Head of the Department was Prof. G. G. Parfitt (1976 – 1985) followed by Prof R. V. Hesketh (1985 -1988), Prof. J. T. Ndefru (1988 – 1998), Prof. A. O. Musa (1998 – 2003), Prof. S. S. Duwa (2003 – 2008), Dr. U. M. Gana (2008 – 2010), Prof. G. Babaji (2010 – 2012), Dr. M. Saleh (2012 – 2014), Dr. T. H. Darma (2014 – 2016), and Prof . G. S. M. Galadanci (2016-2020). I happen to be the eleventh and the current Head of Department. At its inception, the Department started a degree program in physics (B.Sc. in Physics). The B.Sc. in Electronics program was later introduced in the 2004/2005 academic session that was renamed as B.Sc. in Electronics with Physics in 2016. Physics is the experimental and theoretical study of matter and energy and their interactions, at the microscopic and macroscopic levels in the domain of mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, nuclear and atomic physics, solid-state, acoustics, and ultimately, to the origins of the universe itself. Studying physics offers students a fundamental understanding of the way the universe works, brings them to the forefront of technology and provides them with the opportunity to be versatile in every field of human endeavor. Physics is a flavor that enables us to appreciate the essence of life. Electronics is a branch of Physics and Electrical Engineering. The basis of electronics is the application of electrical charges to utilize electrical energy in devices and appliances. Electronics have evolved in scope into two major areas of digital and analog electronics. Advances in Sciences and Technology demand people with knowledge of electric and electronic circuits design, power, computing, etc. who can drive human development. Physics and Electronics motivate individuals to learn more about the world. Employment prospects for physics and electronics graduates are very good. The scientific knowledge, logical reasoning, mathematical and analytical skills that one may acquire could lead to finding work across a wide range of industries including aerospace, electronics, Mineral Exploration, communications, information technology, research, computing, medicine, education, defense, commerce and civil service: both in scientific and administrative areas. The Department is here to guide students to achieve their dreams and exploit their potentials to the fullest. Level coordinators have been assigned at all levels who can advise and guide students on how to pursue their studies successfully and on all matters relating to the students’ life on campus. All staff in the Department is ready and willing at all times to attend to students’ problems. I wish you a successful stay at Bayero University, Kano, and the Department of Physics and hope that you will be law-abiding and obedient during your study periods so that you will become worthy ambassadors to be awarded the degree of Physics or Electronics in both character and learning.
